Teaching Through H1N1

by Laurie Godwin on October 16, 2009

A series provided by Academic Outreach

By now you have heard about H1N1 and continuity of instruction.  So, how do you get started creating your Continuity of Instruction plan?  This site contains resources to help you prepare, including the ECU Continuity of Instruction Plan, updates from Provost Sheerer and interviews with faculty.

We invite you to listen in as we talk with two ECU faculty about their Continuity plans, how they were developed, challenges and practical suggestions.  These interviews are pre-recorded for your convenience, so you can listen while you are on the go, or read the transcript.  You will hear from Tim Kelley, Professor and Director of the Environmental Health Sciences and Safety Program in the College of Health and Human Performance.  Tim says his ‘disaster’ (e.g., infectious disease outbreak or epidemic) course backup would be similar to what he currently does for absent students, which is providing the classroom exercises via e-mail and requiring that absent students complete them and return them electronically.  You will also hear from Mark Weitzel, Teaching Instructor and Director of the Financial Wellness Institute from the College of Business.  Mark’s Continuity of Instruction plan would quickly transform his face-to-face classes into distance education classes where students can listen to narrated PowerPoint lectures and work at their own pace to complete the coursework.  A special thank you to Tim Kelley and Mark Weitzel for taking the time to interview with us and for sharing details about their Continuity plans.
